Caversham Lawn Tennis Club boasts several players who are national champions and successful competitors in international tournaments.
Here we feature some of them, including Gill Galloway, our ladies team which competed in the European Inter-Club Championships and junior player Gabriella Rust-D’Eye.
Among the men, Charles Durham has collected an impressive number of titles as a senior, both at home and abroad.
Gill Galloway is a very successful competitor in ITF Masters events. She has claimed multiple titles, winning the Over-55 Singles at the British Closed Championships at Wimbledon in both 2020 and 2022, and the Over-60s doubles in 2024. Already this year she reached the over 60s doubles final at the British Open Masters Indoor Championships in Wrexham. In 2022, she also represented England in their victorious Four Nations campaign in Bolton.
Caversham ladies have enjoyed great success in the National League Seniors Event. After winning the Over-50s national competition, they earned the opportunity to represent Great Britain at the 2022 European Inter-Club Championships in Antalya, Turkey, where they secured an impressive third-place finish. In 2024, they qualified once again - this time in both the Over-40s and Over-50s age groups - further showcasing Caversham ladies’ strength abroad.
Caversham Ladies National Club League team proudly compete in the regional level of the National Club League. In 2023 and 2024, they secured an impressive runner-up finish - just narrowly missing out on promotion to the national level. A fantastic effort from the team and they’re looking forward to going one step further in future years.
16-year-old Caversham junior Gabriella Rust-D’Eye continues to compete at a high level, representing Berkshire at not only junior but also senior level and regularly participating in regional level events. A notable achievement was competing at No. 1 for Berkshire in the U18 12 Counties Championship at the beginning of 2025 and winning 2 out of 3 matches.
In 2024 Gabriella won an open Grade 3 regional event in Devon. Additionally, she progressed through the club and county stages of ‘Play Your Way to Wimbledon’ to qualify for the national finals.
Charles Durham has managed to win all four of the major national ITF Masters National singles titles on three different surfaces: Wimbledon (grass), Bournemouth (clay), Wrexham (indoor hard), Eastbourne (grass).
Commonly known as the career grand slam of British Masters tennis, these events determine selection for the Great Britain Teams to play in the World Championships.
Charles has played for the GB team twice, in Florida in 2022 where the team achieved 8th place and Mexico in 2024 where it achieved 7th place. He is hoping to be selected again this year to represent the team in Portugal in August having won both Bournemouth and Eastbourne national titles in 2024.
Charles’ ITF World ranking currently stands at 24, with a high of 17 in singles. In doubles he is currently ranked 6 with a high of 5.
He hopes to win a medal in both the World Team championships for Team GB and in the World Individual Championships and he intends to continue to strive in this aim.
Playing for GB opens doors to play in other international matches for the International Club of Great Britain. Recent matches include a centenary celebration at the All England Lawn Tennis Club v 23 teams from other countries, the Potter Cup in Real Club de Barcelona, Columbus Cup in Leopold Club in Belgium and the Wallenberg trophy for which Charles is now GB captain, played last year in Dusseldorf and this year at St Georges Hill in Surrey.
